The Death of Sarah

Part 1 – Flexibility Training – Reading
As we begin the third week of our study, we say goodbye to Sarah as well as Abraham.  In this story, one of the last that focus on him, Abraham buys the burial plot that will be visited several more times in the book of Genesis.

ESV – Genasis 23 – BibleHub
NLT – Genesis 23 – BibleHub

That is an interesting way of negotiating the price of a burial plot.  To those in the West, it likely seems strange.  But in the Middle East, and even in part of the Far East, this is still a common way of bargaining and negotiating the price of something.

PART 2 – Strength Training – Memory & Thinking
Keep reviewing the verses from the previous two weeks as you commit this verse to your memory.

1 Peter 3:5-6  This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They trusted God and accepted the authority of their husbands. For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him her master. You are her daughters when you do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do.

When you read the story of Sarah laughing, did you think of it as being an example of how she honored her husband?  As you read through the section from 1st Peter, ponder that as you work on memorizing it.

1 Peter 3:4-6  Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

Isaiah 51:1-2  “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness,
you who seek the Lord:
look to the rock from which you were hewn,
and to the quarry from which you were dug.
Look to Abraham your father
and to Sarah who bore you;
for he was but one when I called him,
that I might bless him and multiply him.

Part 3 – Cardio Training – Prayer
Death comes to all.  As you reflect on the death of Sarah and the legacy she left behind her, spend some time talking to God about the legacy you are leaving behind.  Ask Him to help you live a godly life today so that those you leave behind will be blessed to have known you.  You might pray something like this:

Dear Father, I want people to remember me as someone who loved You above all and worked to be a blessing as Abraham was to the world.  Help me to pursue righteousness.  Help me to live a life of obedience today, committing each day I live to You…

Part 4 – Endurance Training
A life of godliness is lived one day at a time.  A life of faith is built one decision at a time, one moment of trusting at a time.  Keep committing each day to acknowledge the Lord, trusting Him to direct you in the way you should go.

And keep reading and memorizing His Word so that You may know him better!

An Extra Mile
It is interesting to note that Sarah is the only woman in the Bible whose age at death is recorded.  There are a number of extraordinary women in the Bible – Eve, Rebekah, Rachel and Leah, Miriam, Deborah, Ruth, Bathsheba, Esther, Mary.  But only Sarah is given the honor of telling how long she lived.  Why do you think this is so?
